Member Spotlight

Angela Strecker is the owner/event planner at Blue Wings Events in Tacoma. She joined Tacoma NACE in the spring.

Blue Wings Events is a full-service planning business that opened in January 2016. The business specializes in planning weddings and corporate events. For weddings, they offer three packages: month-of (not day-of), partial and full-service. Angela and her three assistants serve as the planning and production team.

“We like to help couples personalize weddings,” says Angela. “I encourage them to focus on what, as a couple, makes them unique and then we create a special wedding day for them.”

Their team also helps businesses plan and produce events. The team works on open houses, conferences, trade shows, golf tournaments, and more. She helps the client with their events to be sure the event helps them get sales / return on investment (ROI).

What do you enjoy about working in your field?

“I truly like helping people,” says Angela. “If I can make life easier for the mom of the bride, I’ve done my job. I’m so thrilled when a mom says, ‘I love you.’ I like allowing people to enjoy their day at a work meeting or open house, or at a wedding. When they enjoy their day with no problems, it’s a good day.”

However, when unanticipated problems arise Angela says, “I’m a quick thinker and I like resolving problem issues quickly. I like guiding people through experiences and using all my knowledge to help make events easier for people. I enjoy being in charge.”

What did you do before you had this business?

For 26 years Angela worked for Bank of America. For the last 16 years there, she was a sales performance executive manager and an events coordinator. Her territory covered 11 states and New York City. “I had a huge team,” says Angela. They planned and produced golf tournaments, sales meetings, small business meetings, forums, conferences, and trade shows.

She left that position to study entrepreneurship at Pierce College where she earned an Associate degree. The education helped her prepare to start her new business.

What do you hope to gain from being a Tacoma NACE member?

“I enjoy networking with my peers – people who understand this business,” says Angela. “I want to learn from others who are there and feel free to ask them questions.”

In turn she is willing to be a speaker at a chapter meeting on topics such as public speaking, etiquette, how to write speeches and more. She is also willing to help organize meetings.

Free time means fun time

When Angela isn’t working – usually week days – she fishes for trout with her dad near Mount Vernon, WA.

She and her husband come from big families, so they spend a lot of time with family “We have organized monthly events that we call FFF,” she says. “It stands for Forced Family Fun.” She describes the events, “Everyone in the family is forced to attend, to be with their family and to have fun.” The activities vary from standup paddle boarding where 30 may attend to picnics when 100 might attend. She and her husband also like to travel around the state and Oregon.
